God’s Safety Net

On May 28, 1937 the Golden Gate Bridge was opened across the waters of San Francisco Bay. President Franklin D. Roosevelt announced the achievement from the White House, yet the bridge was already famous all over the world. The construction of the bridge was managed with the safety of its workers in mind. In a day when workers lives were expected to be lost as the cost of doing business, the managers of this project took special care to ensure safety.

Headgear was worn which became the predecessor to today’s hardhat. The managers also introduced the most peculiar safety device in the history of bridge building, a safety net.

The Golden Gate safety net stretched the entire length of the structure. Spanning between its supports, the net lay ready to catch any who might slip and fall. In fact, it did catch and save 19 men from death.  These men became proudly known as “The Halfway to Hell Club.”  The net was not perfect and some lives were lost, but the workers performed their jobs without the usual fear of death that was common on such projects. The work was finished before its projected date of completion.

“And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.”  -John 10:28

Jesus guarantees that the eternal life He has given Believers can never be lost, not for any reason.  His promise is a safety net to us.  It assures that we can approach life with a confidence that no matter what comes, He stretches the arms of His unfailing grace underneath us. His promise to us still rings, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” – Hebrews  13:5

The exciting news of God’s promise of life everlasting should be relentlessly preached and taught. We should sound it out to the lost as the good news of salvation and also repeat it to the saved to nourish their growth in grace.

The good news that God saves us, and keeps us, by free grace is not a detriment to the Christian life; it is the foundation for it. The teaching of everlasting life sets the Bible’s message of salvation apart from the heresy of manmade religion.  The safety net of god’s grace is the only means of salvation and the greatest motivation to work for the Lord. ?
